Betsy Gotbaum was elected Public Advocate in 2001, and re-elected in 2005.

Betsy Gotbaum is the City's watchdog and New Yorkers' ombudswoman.

The Public Advocate solves problems on behalf of all New Yorkers. Over 12,000 cases are handled directly every year by the Ombudsman's Unit and it is this real world experience that helps shape the Public Advocate's policy directives.
