Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum Statement on Senate Passing School Governance Bill
MANHATTAN -- Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum said, “After weeks of delay, I am pleased to learn that the State Senate has passed a school governance bill that extends mayoral control, while adding new provisions to increase transparency and public accountability. I am particularly pleased that the bill will give the Independent Budget Office oversight related to DOE’s budget, and the Comptroller authority to audit the DOE’s procurement contracts. Both of these changes were recommended by my Commission on School Governance.
The bill also includes provisions that have the potential to improve the process for parental involvement. While these provisions don’t go as far as I would like, they are a good start. It is crucial that elected officials remain vigilant to ensure that these changes are implemented over the next six years."
