Statement from PA Gotbaum on Elevator Shaft Fall
Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum said, "Last night's horrific elevator incident is a reminder that the city's chronic elevator problems continue to escalate. Considering the budget constraints NYCHA is facing, I welcome the news that it will spend $112 million over the next five years to get its elevators working properly. But the fact that 75% of NYCHA elevators receive unsatisfactory ratings upon inspection is totally unacceptable. They serve more than 400,000 New Yorkers, many of them the youngest and oldest in our communities. Any major elevator malfunction poses a safety risk. The city must do everything possible to prioritize and fast-track the most urgent elevator repair projects."
