The removal of Ms. Lam is good news for New York City ’s 1.1 million public school children. This gives the City the opportunity to reexamine the misguided curriculum changes she forced upon the school system.
But there is more housekeeping that needs to happen at the DOE.
I am disturbed by recent reports of no-bid contracts being awarded to hire $33,000-a- month public relations consultants; various reading programs purchased for millions of dollars without bids; and consultants hired at exorbitant per diem rates and placed on the payrolls of non-profit organizations to avoid public scrutiny. The Chancellor refusal to respond to my request that they release the list of all employees and consultants hired by these non-profits raises serious questions. The integrity of the leadership of the school system is at stake.
I call on the Chancellor to stop stonewalling and come clean before more scandals hit the press.
