Public Advocate Gotbaum Statement on

Martin Luther King Day 2008

Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum said, “Each year on Martin Luther King Day, we honor the work of a great leader and celebrate the progress he helped make possible. As we look back and commemorate all of the sacrifices he made – and the sacrifices that everyone involved in the movement for social and human justice made – we also need to look forward. The simple truth is that the best way to honor his legacy is by reaffirming our own commitment to human justice.

As Public Advocate, I am committed to fighting for a level playing field for all New Yorkers – without conditions or exceptions.

My work as an elected official, as a New Yorker, won’t be done until every community– Black, White, Latino, Asian – shares equally in the benefits of economic prosperity.

In the face of great challenges, Dr. King continued to march forward, continued to work to give everyone these opportunities and rights. He never hesitated when the going got rough. He never faltered when he grew tired.

Today, we must commit ourselves again to keep working and keep marching forward in his honor. That is the legacy of Dr. King, and it is the legacy I will celebrate today.”
