Public Advocate Gotbaum Statement on the Handcuffing of a Queens Kindergartner in School
Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum said, "It is a very sad day when children in our schools are treated like prisoners. The handcuffing of a kindergartner at PS 81 is completely unacceptable. The school safety officers demonstrated no common sense.
For too long now, I’ve been urging the DOE to consider the difference between disobedience in the classroom and crime on the street. Instead, the DOE has tried to make the NYPD the answer to discipline problems. The bottom line: school safety officers need better training and greater supervision. This latest incident shows that the DOE must reform their policies and procedures for handling disobedience in schools, and take immediate action to reduce the number of incidents like the one that occurred last week."
