Public Advocate Gotbaum Releases Videocast on Helping Caregivers Fight Workplace Discrimination
MANHATTAN -- Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum today released a new videocast, "Protecting Caregivers", about her legislation to protect New York caregivers from workplace discrimination. The New York City Human Rights Law, one of the most comprehensive civil rights laws in the nation, fails to expressly protect New Yorkers caring for loved ones from discrimination in the workplace.

Caregiver: It has always affected every single job that I’ve had…
[Caregiver, sitting in office]
Caregiver: Because, you know, you have to call in, “okay, I have an appointment for my son today at this doctor,” and okay – if that doctor recommends you to another doctor – “well, tomorrow I have to go to this doctor now, sorry I can’t come in, you know”

[Betsy Gotbaum, at podium on city hall steps]
Gotbaum: You know, there are about 2 million New Yorkers who are taking care of members of their family or others, and that’s gonna get bigger and bigger as baby boomers retire. And we have to really think about what that is going to mean.
[City Council Member Bill de Blasio on city hall steps]
De Blasio: Well, today, before Betsy Gotbaum took action, today, that individual can be discriminated against, if they’re having to adjust to their work schedule, they have to make accommodations because of their personal reality, they could loose their job…
Betsy Gotbaum: They have enough on their plates as it is, and they shouldn’t have to worry about what’s going to happen in the workplace, so this is why we’re introducing this bill.
