Statement by Public Advocate de Blasio on Planned Parenthood

February 2, 2012

“It is a sad day when politics comes between a woman and her health, especially when it means low-income women may lose their only access to life-saving breast cancer screenings.

“Despite all of the great work done by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to advance the fight against breast cancer, I am disappointed by the Foundation’s decision to validate a bogus investigation by anti-choice activists in the U.S. House of Representatives that is nothing more than a politically charged smear campaign against Planned Parenthood.

“I applaud Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his very generous donation to Planned Parenthood to help ensure women across the country do not lose access to life-saving cancer screening and prevention services. I wholeheartedly agree with the Mayor that there is no place for politics in the fight against breast cancer.”
