De Blasio: Mayor's Decision to End Advantage Program will Put 8,000 Families at Risk of Eviction and Homelessness
“The Bloomberg Administration is putting thousands of families at risk of losing their homes and returning to homeless shelters, and throwing away everything we have learned about preventing homelessness and helping families get back on their feet in the process.
“Instead of finding ways to keep these families in their homes, the Mayor’s decision to immediately stop payment on February rent for at least 8,000 families will mean a surge of entries to our homeless shelters, which are already close to the breaking point.
“Every night, more than 41,000 homeless New Yorkers, including 17,000 homeless children, bed down across our shelter system—an all-time record. But instead of finding a solution to this crisis, the City is taking a huge step backwards and is poised add thousands more to the rolls of our city's homeless.”
