Public Advocate Gotbaum Supports Northern Ireland Grand Marshals for Saint Patty’s Day Parade
Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum today said, “I strongly support Niall O’Dowd’s proposal to have the Northern Ireland leaders, Dr. Ian Paisley and Mr. Martin McGuiness, serve as grand marshal the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Northern Ireland needs our support, and New York City should embrace the model inclusiveness and open-mindedness exemplified by their power-sharing government and welcome these leaders to marshal one of our city’s great celebrations.
It is long past time for a fully inclusive Saint Patrick’s Day Parade -- one that includes participants from all walks of life, especially the LGBT community. Parade chairman John Dunleavy and the entire Committee should follow the example set by Northern Ireland’s government. An inclusive parade would surely mark a great day for the Irish, as well as a great day for New York City.”
