Gotbaum
Calls for Independent Review of ACS
Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum today
called for an independent review of the Administration for Children’s
Services (ACS) at a City Council hearing on the agency’s
operations.
In her statement, Ms. Gotbaum said,
“Many facts and details come to light when a child is killed,
and yet ultimately, we don’t seem to learn the lessons that
could help us prevent the next tragedy.” Ms. Gotbaum cited
a number of cases, including most recently the potentially fatal
injury of 4-month-old Preston Hertzog, who was allegedly shaken
by his parents.
“It is clear to me that we are
running in place,” Ms. Gotbaum said. “ACS is a failed
agency, it is part of a failed child welfare system, and simply
changing the names at the top is not enough to rescue it. The
time has come for an independent, public review of the way ACS
operates and, more importantly, of every single case in the child
welfare system.”
