Statement by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum on DOE Pilot Project

To Let Students Store Cell Phones in Coin-Operated Lockers

“Where there’s a will there’s a way and, finally, the Department of Education appears willing to listen to parents.

“Unfortunately, DOE seems intent on moving at glacial speed in reversing course on its misguided cell phone policy, prolonging for at least two more years the anxiety of tens of thousands of parents concerned for their children’s safety on the way to and from school.

“As I’ve said many times, rather than vigorously enforcing a dated policy, DOE should go back to allowing principals and teachers to use their discretion, as they did for years, in curbing inappropriate cell phone use.

“As could be seen in the e-mails I recently delivered to the Mayor, parents and students can ill afford to wait two years for the Department of Education to develop a sensible cell phone policy.”
