City Council 
The New York City Council enacts local laws, approves the executive budget proposed by the Mayor, and has decision-making powers over land-use issues. There are 51 members, each elected to serve four years.

All City Council meetings and committee meetings are open to the public; anyone may attend and speak. Check the City Council Website for meeting schedules or call the 24-hour City Council Schedule Hotline. Minutes from these meetings are also available.

The City Hall Library is the library and information center of
the City's official business. It collects and makes available
to the public things like the City Record (the City's official
announcements of its meetings, dealings and contracts), the laws
and regulations of the State and City of New York, and reference
copies of reports and studies published by City agencies (including
the Mayor's Management Report, the Executive Budget, Comptroller's
audits, and the Public Advocate's studies). The library is open
to the public. For a small fee, you can photocopy useful documents.
