Gotbaum Report Finds Judges Rarely Back City in Actions Against New Yorkers Seeking Public Benefits

An analysis of data acquired by the Office of the Public Advocate suggests that the Human Resources Administration (HRA) is frequently in error when it takes actions such as denying applications for public benefits or sanctioning low-income clients, according to a report released by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum. The report charges that HRA may be too aggressive in taking such actions, at a great cost to the city.  Read More

Mayor Signs Language Access to Pharmacies Act

Mayor Bloomberg signed the Language Access to Pharmacies Act, introduced in 2008 by Public Advocate Gotbaum. The bill will require New York City chain pharmacies to translate medical instructions into the seven languages most commonly spoken by residents who have limited English proficiency. Read More

NYC Public School Principals Divided Over ARIS System, Gotbaum Survey Says

A majority of New York City Public School principals surveyed by the Office of the Public Advocate support an $81 million computer system designed to boost achievement and accountability in classrooms. However, over two-thirds of respondents believe that the Department of Education (DOE) spent too much money on the system, and many principals expressed concern about its acceptance among teachers.  Read More
